12/2007 - Sewer Rehabilitation Project

The Harriman Utility Board (HUB) sewer system is a complex of gravity mains, force mains, and pump stations which combine to collect sewage from users (customers) and carry it to the treatment plant. The plant separates the solids, called biosolids, from the liquids. The liquids are treated (once treated they are called effluent) and then returned to the environment.

The original sewer system was installed around 50 years ago, so in the late 1990’s HUB undertook an extensive rehabilitation project to upgrade the system and bring the sewer department in compliance with Federal and State rules and regulations. This involved inspecting the lines via smoke testing and cameras to identify areas of infiltration and inflow (I & I). Problems were identified and prioritized. A significant portion of the work included rehabbing the pump stations. Of the 18 stations, 16 have been completed.

HUB financed the sewer projects by a series of grants and low interest loans as well as with funds from its annual operating budget..
