Mercury Vapor Lighting Policy

Passed by Board (2/25/08)

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 states that no mercury vapor lamp ballasts can be manufactured or imported after January 1, 2008. In response to this new regulation the Board has adopted the following policy:

  1. No new mercury vapor lighting will be installed after Jan. 1, 2008 except for applications made prior to Jan.1, 2008, if any.
  2. When we receive a repair request for a mercury vapor light we will attempt to repair it.  If we still have any replacement ballasts in stock we will continue to use them for repairs to security lights (not street lights), as needed, for as long as our supply lasts. Once our supply of ballasts has been depleted, paragraph 3 below will be applicable.
  3. If we are unable to repair a mercury vapor fixture without replacing the ballast, we will remove that fixture and;
  • If it is a street light, we will replace 175w mercury vapor fixtures with 100w high pressure sodium fixtures and 400w mercury vapor fixtures with 200w high pressure sodium fixtures.
  • If it is a security light, we will give the customer the option of selecting another type lighting fixture that we offer and enter into a new contractual agreement for that fixture, or the customer will have the option of not replacing the mercury vapor fixture (regardless of whether or not their contractual agreement has been fulfilled) and having the light rental amount removed from their monthly bill.
